Family Wardrobe Advice

1. Choose colors that are similar in tone. Soft, neutral colors work great. The goal is to create a coordinated, balanced look. Some families wear matching outfits like dark jeans and white tops, or khaki pants and dark tops. That can look fine, but don’t feel limited to this. Another option might be to choose tops in several colors but a similar tone, paired with dark denim pants.

2. Avoid bold patterns and stripes. Narrow stripes or very small patterns are fine if worn by only one or two people. Use the colors represented in the stripes or pattern to select clothing for the remaining people.

3. Smooth, fitted (but not tight) clothing works better than very loose clothing or bulky sweatshirts or sweaters.

4. Women should wear long-sleeves or three-quarter length sleeves. Choose v-necks, turtlenecks and squarenecks. Avoid polo shirts and crew necks. Avoid shorts and short skirts.

5. Men should wear long sleeves and long pants. Wearing a t-shirt under a button-down shirt is fine.

6. Children can wear sleeveless or short-sleeve tops. Avoid t-shirts with logos, cartoons or other distracting elements.

7. Sometimes it’s ok to break the rules — depending on the setting or your individual preferences. Be sure to discuss your wardrobe ideas and questions with Don before your portrait session.
