I’ve photographed many of life’s milestone moments – weddings, new babies, graduating seniors and the like. I never imagined I’d photograph my daughter’s engagement, especially on a Tuscan hillside.
It happened on our recent visit to Italy with our family. One evening as we prepared dinner in our villa, Steven took each of us aside to explain that he was hoping to propose to Rena – he was just waiting for the right place and time. He found it the next day after we toured the La Foce garden near Montepulciano. We were all intrigued by the cypress-lined road across the valley and decided to drive the narrow, rocky road to the top.
After reaching the top, we parked the car to get out and enjoy the view. Rena was cold and remained in the car, but eventually joined Steven and I above the road on the hilltop. At that point, Steven quietly asked me to give them a minute, so I returned to the car. It took me a few minutes to react like a photographer instead of a dad. I realized what a great photo op this was and began shooting as Steven got down on one knee. I think it’s safe to say that Rena was surprised. The answer was yes, and we could not be happier. Welcome to the family, Steven!
