Aurora borealis

I was lucky enough to encounter the northern lights on Thursday, June 6. Just before heading to bed, I noticed a faint sign the northern lights were starting to fire up. This was the best show I’ve ever witnessed. Although the vivid colors were not obvious to the eye, except for the blue, the camera captured very intense colors, which I then dialed back a bit in post production. A yellowish green is the most common color, produced by oxygen molecules about 60 miles above the earth. The blueish color is produced by nitrogen. The northern lights run in roughly 11 year cycles with 2013 being a peak year. Enjoy!
