I had the chance to photograph Don Shelby for Tonka Times Magazine recently. Don and his wife Barbara have built a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certified home in Excelsior. The Shelby’s chose the Landshute Group as their architect and builder. Their new home used lumber from the previous cottage that stood on the site, has efficient heating and air conditioning, re-uses gray water, has a pervious driveway to prevent run off into Lake Minnetonka, and has solar panels.
We ended up shooting just twenty-some hours before the house opened for the Parade of Homes. Crews were working throughout the house. Furniture and props for staging the home were scattered around. Don’s office was already propped, so we started up there, above the garage. When I learned the caricature was Dave Moore, I just had to shoot a series of Don with Dave in the background, even though it had absolutely nothing to do with the Tonka Times article. Glad I did too.
